artist statement & bio

Stephanie Arvelo is a self-taught abstract artist and photographer based in Brooklyn, NY. Her work relies on personal experience and intuition to communicate the playful connection between colors, shapes, lines, and textures. Her process is often unplanned and experimental, each layer and mark reacting to the one before. Other times it is more intricate and involved, requiring thought and manipulation. This collaboration between effortlessness and consideration inspires a visual vocabulary used to inform new work.

wanting to find balance in life, I rely on taking photos and painting as visual and therapeutic ways to interpret and express thoughts and emotions during seasons of change and discovery. my work is a showcase of interactions between strangers and friends, mental souvenirs of my travels, and visual notes of personal growth. I enjoy experimenting with different mediums and techniques, testing the boundaries of my creative mind whether i’m using water to push paint across a blank canvas or learning how to manipulate light for a shot. Every layer of color and photograph represents memories i’ve collected throughout my life, telling stories of growing up in tropical south florida and life in urban brooklyn.
